Hanging baskets for shade

TreadukTreaduk Posts: 42

Afternoon everyone,

My front door is north-facing and in shade for most of the day.

I'm thinking of buying some ferns, hostas and ivys for hanging baskets out the front - would they be happy in baskets?

Any other ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Some of the newer varieties of clematis are suitable for hanging baskets in the shade. Have a look at Taylor's Clematis website.

We've grown Hostas in a window-box for many years. They're perfectly happy and look lovely.

Ferns and ivies make for great displays in hanging baskets.

Fibrex Nureries specialise in ferns and ivies, with some unusual varieties to choose from. They offer a mail-order serviceΒ https://www.fibrex.co.uk/

Other good choices could be Heucheras, Heucherellas, Lamiums or Ajuga.

The baskets will need to be kept moist at all times, of course.

I have heucheras in mine and, last year, bought a trailing heuchera. It got a bit battered in our storms but I have trimmed it back and it's making a lot of good growth.
