Thin hedge problems

Hi everyone, first time poster.

Im looking for some advice work out how to thicken our hedge for privacy.

we have been here for one year, this summer is our first attempt at getting the garden how we want it going forward.

The hedge wasn't cut regularly by the previous owners and although it is the height we want, you can see through it.

Were in Scotland, the leaves were off in the winter and have started to grow back.

Is there anything i can I can do this month or so to give us a think hedge for the summer?

One or two main stems of the hedge appear to be dead, which might be causing the gaps

Ive attached a few pictures to let you all see it. Any advice you can give would be amazing and much appreciated. Thanks

I can only see one picture and can't tell what the hedge is from that one.

Can you take a close up picture of the foliage and any flowers, please? That will help with identification.

If you were to cut a couple of feet off the top it will sprout out lower down. It will soon grow again in height but thicker.

Yup, it's privet.  Like Lyn says, chop the top off to encourage new growth.  You can hard prune the sides to make a denser hedge too, but I would do only one side this year and wait for it to thicken up first. Otherwise it will be too bare to give any privacy, do the other side next year.
