paeonies are big plants and don't do well in pots in the long term. Could it be planted out?

  • Paeonies need to be planted very close to the surface, otherwise they will not flower.

Yes, they are best in the ground where they can spread their roots and ge all the moisture they need.  Planting depth is critical - too deep and their flower buds never develop, too shallow and they can't develop.    Thus, they always need to be bought in flower and planted at the same depth as they were in their pot.

Can you think back 7 years and remember whether you were too kind and planted it too deep?  Or maybe squished it in an unsuitable pot and plated too shallow?

I have 2 which I bought about 4 years ago.  They are about 10 feet apart in the same border, with exactly the same growing conditions.  One flowered well last year and is looking even more promising this year.  The other hasn't yet flowered but I can see one bud - yippee.  It would seem they can take a while to settle in!

  • Thank you all for your advice, it would seem that it will have to vacate its pot and settle in the border, the point about planting depth is something i wasn't aware of and probably why there has been no flowers, so as it a nice day tomorrow we will replant it in the border and not so deep this time and hopefully the big white flowers it had when i bought it will reappear. Thank you all again.

It's probably too late to make any difference to flowering this year, so I would be inclined to either leave it until autumn to lift, or leave it altogether in the hope that it will do the same as mine has and start to flower eventually.
