Does this Clematis Montana flower more than once during the year? I ask because the flowers on mine are just about finished (it's first year of flowering), and because we live so far south I wondered if it would flower again later in the year, so I am unwilling to prune it yet in case I cut off any potential flowering stems. I have another clematis - name unknown, that flowered 3 times last year, so I pruned it after the third flowering and again earlier this year.
It flowers once a year, a lovely welcome to spring. If you have to cut it back be careful not to cut the main stem. A neighbour trimmed hers and killed it.
I'd rather not prune it Esspee - it has such a lot of lovely fresh growth and I train the new shoots along the trellis almost everyday - it would be a shame to lose the density of the new growth by pruning it.
It's a group 1 clematis. Prune after flowering giving a light trim to tidy it up or keep it in bounds or else go back hard to just above the lowest 2 buds in order to rejuvenate.
Whichever you do, give it a generous feed of slow release clematis or rose granular feed and a liquid tonic of tomato feed. Train in new growth as and when.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Brilliant advice thanks Obelixx. Do you know if Freckles and Blue Dancer are group 1 clematis too? They flowered at the same time as the Montana - all first year plants, so pleased with them.

Clematis Montana , prune after flowering if you want or let it go mad
How far back can I prune it?
I is a bit like a Hydra! Cut off the existing shoots and two more grow in it's place. Ask Hercules.
When you prune a stem they can put out shoots on both sides of the previous stem and it keeps branching. You can usually cut them back fairly hard.
