Thalictrum plant companion

TomCranhamTomCranham Posts: 139

I've a new border this year and for the side that is partially shaded i have placed a lot of different sized thalictrums. Could anyone suggest planting partners for the taller thalictrums? Preferably bee friendly and if flowering, blue, purple or pink!

Thanks in advance

Mine are / will be underplanted with a variety of stuff including (but not confined to) alchemilla mollis, epimediums, different brunneras, sweet woodruff, primula vulgaris and geranium cantabrigiense "Biokovo'.

Geranium nodosum is a nice natural looking one, flowers continuously and the 'maple leaved' foliage is really nice. The flowers are a pinky purple that have a glow or shimmer to them.

Oh yes - I'd forgotten I had that in there too WillDBimage

    G. nodosum is a really good 'doer' - unassuming but very pretty. A lot of my other stuff is a bit spring flowering biased (but it retains a good ground cover presence) - but G. nodosum flowers on and off all summerimage

WillDB that geranium should fit in pretty well actually!

My Thalictrum aquilegifolium is planted in amongst Aquilegias of various shades and Digitalis purpurea.

When the light catches the border in the evening and shines through the petals, it looks lovely - like a mauve and pink haze.

In the same border, there is also:

    - Primula vulgaris

    - Primula veris

    - Melissa officinalis 'Aurea'

(the Primulas and golden-variegated Melissa look stunning together - a happy accident in my garden)

    - Hemerocallis 'Precious Pink'

    - Iris germanica (purple)

    - Sedum spectabileΒ

    - Alchemilla mollis

    - and others...
