The disappearing aqueligias

For about 10 years I had a fantastic border full of double bonnet aqueligias that had self sown and spread from one original plant. There must have been about 30 mature plants. Last year they had all disappeared, not one came up. I have noticed tiny little seedlings appear in the past couple of weeks, but what might have happened to all the mature plants?

I didn't see any signs of downy mildew last year but there are far fewer aquilegias in my garden this year. (yours are still OK fidget) image

Thanks Fidgetbones for the webpage, most informative. I wish now that I had taken more notice last year.  I have bought a new  pot with 3 separate plants in it, so I will plant one where the affected plants were and the other 2 in a completely different area and watch what happens.
