Our aquilegia seedlings haven't done so well this year either Tim. Normally I just let them self seed from the parent plant (in our flower bed) directly into the soil, but last autumn I sowed over 100 seeds - some from packets and others I had collected from various plants in this vicinity. All have had brown, spotted or dying leaves and the plants are poor and very few flowers so far.
Someone gave me some mature plants with far more flowers than mine, but again with the spotty leaves - the same as our aquilegia.
I was advise to put the plants outside (they were in our gold GH) in January or February as this would help to strengthen them, and it did help to a certain extent.
I have the same problem with my Aquilegia. All mine are infected with downey mildew Just had to rip them all up out of the ground. Even the seedlings are looking very sickly at the minute.
What makes downey mildew spread across the whole country certain years?

There is a problem with aquilegia downy mildew. The National collection has been devastated. More info here..
