Wisteria overload?

NilsonNilson Posts: 13

Hi there,

As a keen novice gardener, I'm really starting to enjoy my garden and start planting some different colours into the landscape.

Here's my conundrum - along the front of the house we had around 6 pyracantha's, which managed to burst around 6-7 of my son's footballs! However, it looked nice and in the Winter gave an amazing display of red berries. I really wanted a change though as the thorns are a complete nightmare, so last weekend I removed them and made way for planting some wisteria along the front. Here's an image of the pyracantha before I removed it -

In all, I have purchased 5 Sinensis Prolific's and spaced them out along the the front of the house, which is around 15m long, but I've suddenly realised that this may be a bit overkill. They look fine at the moment being small, but is this too many with the growth expectancy?

Or will this be okay if I keep on top of the maintenance?

Any advice appreciated! ;)

    If it's only 15 metres - yes, that's overkill!

I think one would have been enough - two at most. image

Have you anywhere else you can plant them?

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Ha, I thought I was being overly ambitious!

I can return one, as the garden centre had a wisteria tree that looked rather impressive and I can have a think about the rest. I have a new arch on its way, which I might plant one around this. I can always make space for Wisteria! :)

Thanks for the advice, really appreciate it! ;)

Yes, you planted too many of those. For 15 metres I would have planted one or at most 2 specimens! And you should also provide adequate support now, before it's too late.

    PS.- Nice house you've got!

Hi, and thanks to you and Fairygirl for the advice and correcting the images! ;)

I'll definitely add some strong fixings and better wiring this weekend to tackle the growth!

    Thanks again! ;)

    Hi,

Yes, that is overkill, Wisteria is very, very vigorous once established.

I was very excited when I planted my first wisteria 5 years ago, but have since learned that the key to maintaining it is "pruning" at the right time and in the right way.

The video on this website shows exactly what to do, and as with all of us you will make mistakes, but because it is a robust plant you can recover the next year. By the way it may not flower well for a year or two.

    Have fun ?

    Hi Carole,
    Thanks for the advice! :)
I must admit when I planted the wisteria, it looked so bare that I just kept planting!

In terms of flowering, will they not appear next year as I specifically got the grafted version?

    I'll check out the video.

    Thanks

Can I suggest you train your children not to kick their footballs at the Wisteria. It won't be as resilient as the pyracantha.

Good point, footballs and Wisteria do not work well.

They may well flower next year but probably not in a big way, water and feed well until established.
