Plants for under a Magnolia

Judy60Judy60 Posts: 12

I'm looking for suggestions fo some low ground cover plant, preferable flowering or at least ornamental to go under my Magnolia adjacent to a low wall and in a dryish location.  Any ideas?

How much sun does that spot get, underneath the tree?  How big is the Magnolia?

    Is it evergreen or deciduous?

The magnolia is deciduous, height approx 3m and branches start about 90cm from ground level.  Branches extends approx 1m out from main trunk in all directions. No sun in the spot I want to plant.

Its in the corner of the front garden and the boundary wall is approx 35cm high and approx 80 cm from trunk along road side, lawn up to base of trunk on house side.  Flower beds along wall and neighbours garden. side

Lawn is growing happily under it on open side, scrufft grass between Magnolia & wall and impossible to mow that bit, hence the wish to pretty it up a bit.  Could just mulch but would prefer ground cover plant to mulching if possible.

What colour are the Magnolia's flowers? Do you have any overall colour scheme in place?

I'm into Ajuga (variegata) at the moment especially as it's in flower.  It can tolerate shade and the lack of moisture that can come from living under a tree.

The Magnolia is a pale pinky colour no idea what variety it is (can only find an in bud pic at the mo)  No colour scheme I'm afraid - I just grow what I like.  Coincidentally I rummaged through looking at plants for shade last night and one on my list is Ajuga

I have Solomon's seal under mine and it thrives as long as the sawfly don't eat it
