Cherry tree canker

Our cherry tree has the dreaded canker. Is it worth treating organically, or best to dig out?

Wanted to plant a regular non-fruiting tree in same spot. Would it be safe to do so?

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

How bad is the canker on your tree?

We have 3 cherry trees in our garden, all of which have had bacterial canker for many years.

In fact, in our area, which is very damp for much of the year, most people's cherries, plums and other Prunus all have it, but it doesn't seem to bother them too much.

They get shothole in the leaves, there are oozing cankers on some stems and some smaller stems die back.

Any really bad bits get pruned out in late summer, but other than that, I leave them to it.

The RHS website explains a bit about bacterial canker

I failed to mention you'll need to apply a wound paint after pruning
