As you can see, make a note and hold off for 2 weeks next year.  Or even longer in the case of cosmos.

Thanks Janie, no doubt we will have the same questions from people who have sown them too early and they’re now leggy...

    Like me!!!

At least there are about 250 seeds per packet, so you've always got plenty to try again later. It's as if they knew...!!!

Perfect timing @lyn. My cosmos seeds have just germinated and like gutties it's my first time. So thanks to you I know what to do.  :)

Ok, I planted my cosmos last weekend (far too early, I know now!), and this morning they looked like this:

I've now taken out some of them, and planted them a la @Lyn thus:

Just to see if they will get a little stronger. Otherwise, I've still got another 220 seeds to play with next month...!

PS Sorry if the photos are too big

Well planted, they look a bit wet, hold of from watering for a little while you don’t want  them to rot.

Will do, @Lyn, thanks, They're in the warm kitchen, so I expect they'll dry out overnight...

Sow them 2 weeks later next year Janie,  seedlings are usually pricked out once they have another one or two sets of leaves.
The problem with sowing too early is that you can’t plant them out until start of May and you will have to keep potting on until then.  Which is ok if you have the room.

  • @Lyn is this how you always do your cosmos?

Not by choice really, I’d rather sow then later and not have them leggy in the first place.
i sowed mine this year on the 1st April, next year will be a week later, they shouldn’t get leggy then.
I have a gadget called a potter, you can make paper pots then plant the whole thing out in the garden, I’ve made them deeper this year so the cosmos have just dropped in them nicely, no curling needed. 🙂

  • HiI planted seashells mix last 3 days ago and here they are! How long should I let them grow before transplanting them into rectangular planterboxes?
