Revserion or New Growth

Dave HumbyDave Humby Posts: 1,145

The new growth on my variegated Gilt Edge is all of a plain nature. Is this natural reversion or is this how new growth looks before then taking on a more variegated form? It's not just the new growth on the ends of the branch but also new shoots from existing areas. I'm not too bothered either way, just interested to know really.

I understand it's normal practice to trim off any new 'plain' growth and if this was just the tips of each limb that would be quite straightforward but as mentioned I am also see new shoots from further down the existing varieagated limbs that are also of this nature.

(excuse the typo in the title - couldn't edit that)

Thanks

Hi Dave. It does look like reversion to me.

Yes, it's reversion, I've had it too on my variegated eleagnus. Just remove the plain shoots.

Looks very much like reversion Dave. Some shrubs seem more prone than others. Cut back all the reverted(?) bits as far back as you can to try and encourage the plant to produce shoots from the variegated part.

From the plant's point of view, green leaves are far more efficient engines than variegated leaves, so it'll put all its energy into making more green leaves on the reverted bits, rather than variegated leaves.

Thanks folks. I took a close-up of one of the branches to show that it's not just the new growth at the ends of the limbs which is reverting but also new growth spurs from within the variegated branches. Should I be cutting all reverted growth back?

Yes you should Dave, if you want to keep the variegation.
