yellow rhubarb roots

I have not grown rhubarb before and I have just been digging over some ground where Rhubarb has been growing. I see that the roots are yellow and soggy, does that mean the plants are/were diseased ?

Rhubarb roots are pinkish yellow but usually dense and fairly hard. You need a mattock to get through them. You don't mention any leaves. How long ago was rhubarb actively grown in that spot?

Don't really know how long the plants have been there as we have just moved into the house, at a guess 4/5 years. the leaves looked OK altho one plant  was going to seed. Maybe it would be just as easy and safe to replace the plants with new stock.image
