Conifer Problem

Hi All, I'd appreciate a little advice as to what's happened to my scented conifer. We have 7 of these at various places around our lawn border and this one ( see pic ) earlier this year suddenly developed a huge brown patch on the green ferns. This got bigger and the side of the conifer was being eaten away. I dont know how, or what caused this, it looks like something has been splashed on it and its eating it away. Its only affected this one.

Should I cut out the brown areas and hope new green shoots return ? Any advice would be apreciated.

Many thanks  ~ andy

Brown patches in conifers can be caused by any number of reasons. Here's a page that will give some info:

But the article doesn't mention criminal damage which it could be. Regrettably, with that level of die-back, the tree is unlikely to recover - the brown will never go back to green and will just keep spreadingimage

Thanks MowTastic, that's sad news indeed. Ive cut most of the brown out since the photograph was taken a couple of days ago but the conifer really does look bad, especially as its the lead tree at the front of the garden.

The conifer has been given a lot of TLC and your trimmng is brilliant. If it wasn't, the others would be in a similar predicament.

Sadly, it seems that something (or someone image) has broken or infested the old wood. Once this happens, there is little hope of recovery.

Could it be from a passing dog making this tree its regular stopping off place?

No, cant see it being a dog, as it's in our garden, and there's only the one dog on our little culdesac and it would need to be quite a large dog...Ive trimmed some of the old fern away and its just left a huge hole, might have to plant a tall flower infront of the affected area to hide it...

Anyone any ideas as to an ideal sized plant/shrub?
