Damage to climbing rose new growth

Has anyone got any ideas as to what could be chomping its way through the nice new growth on my climing rose.  I planted it last summer and it's growing well, but something has decided it likes the nice soft new growth and decimated the ends of many new shoots.  I've pruned the damaged shoots off and put down slug pellets in case they manage to climb the thorny rose, but I noticed there are a few more eaten shoots. If anyone knows, could you suggest a treatment. Thanks.

Any muntlac deer in your locale?

Sparrows are the main culprits in my garden.  I had to net over clematis because they were taking off all the tips.
