Does anybody know why a ten year old plum tree would start to only produce leaves at the end of its branches. I first noticed this last year and thought it odd but a one off, now its done the same this year.

Is the plum tree getting sufficient light as it looks surrounded by other trees.
Summertime is ideal for pruning plums and I'd be tempted to give it a good feed and a serious pruning of the old wood to invoke fresh new growth.
Also, if there's lot of grass or weeds under the canopy, they can prevent water penetrating the soil and remove nutrients from it too.

Many thanks for the advise. There is plenty of light, the photo made the surrounding trees look closer than they are. I will research how to prune plum trees and feeding. Thanks again
