Sorry if I hurt your feelings, Sarah, by including you in the category of "naive gardeners". For my defence may I quote from the Urban Dictionary article about  "naive":

"People who are naive are not ignorant fools but rather they are people who dare to dream and go against the grain of the all-too-common cynical realist who love playing the role of joy killer."

Please forgive me for playing the "cynical realist". My rant was more directed at the GCS than at their victims.

In my experience jasmine will do fine in a big pot. I have one that's happy in a pot at 5 years old but it's a standard depth big pot one not a shallow one. But it's only just putting out leaves now.

Again the broom shouldn't be in flower now if it's going outside not in a conservatory.

You told the GC where it was going to live you should take them back for a refund. It's their fault and they are liable as you asked advice and relied on their expertise to make your purchase.

So don't plead for a refund, pleasantly demand one. They are liable under the Sales of Goods Act.

The good news is you can have nice things just buy them a bit smaller and buy big pots for them. I get most of mine from Home Bargains which do big plastic ones cheaply.
