Large,neglected School garden

Hello

I work in a secondary school with a very large neglected garden. there are eight raised beds of various dizes with builders rubble makibg up 3/4 of the soil depth. weeds everywhere and a very large lawn with clay soil beds surrounding. i would like some advice ob what to plant and how to make the garden look better. Budget is almost zero

    Hi Mathew, great challenge and a fantastic way to get youngsters into gardening. Try the local freecycle community, often very helpful either post a request for gardening type donations or trawl the offers, often tools and plants etc.

    I'd take the bricks out, put any good ones to one side, halves also, they can be made into paths etc later.

    Could you post any pictures so we can get an idea of your task please?

    That sounds like an exciting challenge. Good ideas from Wonky.

    One thought is that wildflowers can be sown from seed (cheap) plus they don't mind poor soil. 

    I wonder if some of the beds could be used for vegetables - again seeds will be relatively inexpensive.

    Maybe you can run a seed and plant donation event to start things off too.

    Of course, the prep of the ground/beds will be crucial to growing success plus it will be hard work - but that's a lesson in itself for the pupils!
