Horsetail/horsemare and black looking asparagus weeds.

Please can anyone help me,I've got horsetail,or horsemare and last year I bought some stuff that said it would get rid of it ,I got it from b and q and the gardening guy suggested it ,it was about 20.00.so I started mixing the powder and water and started spraying,I sprayed everywhere.earlier this year,I was like OMG,YES,it's gone.!!!!!thank god.

Then about 3 weeks ago my mum called round and she asked me if I was trying to grow asparagus!!!!

No I said,it's sort of black and looks a bit dead it just breaks when you try and pull it out, apparently it's prehistoric!!!!OMG,can this get any worse?? I've read up on the internet and some people say wet newspaper, thickly spread over the area and then mulch on top of it ,some1 else told me to try red Diesel!!,I don't know what to do,I just want it to go.

Please, please can anyone recommend what's the best option.

I look forward to hearing from any1 with some advice.

Many thanks.

Christine

Sorry - but you just have to keep applying weedkiller at regular intervals. You can also pull it out every time you see it as that helps weaken it, but the ones that look 'asparagus' like are the fruiting bodies. Hack them off at the ankles before they seed everywhere.

It's one of the oldest living things on the planet - so it's a battle you'll never win!  Covering it just makes it send it's roots underground and it'll pop up somewhere else - usually the edge of whaterver you cover it with!   You just have to keep controlling it as best you can I'm afraid image

And tell yourself it's ok to have the odd bit in amongst your treasured plants... it doesn't shade other plants or take much in the way of nutrients really.  Pulling it up whenever you see it (use gloves, it shreds your hands) is another option.  We gardeners are never completely in control of what happens in our little patch of paradise - probably a good thing, really!  image

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
