Been thinking about this and I reckon your shrubs will grow back a lot faster than a new clematis will get its feet down and start to scramble to any size. I think you'd be better off just feeding the shrubs and then keeping them trimmed to a size/width that suits you and let them knit back horizontally to make a good garden feature.
Still think you should have a clematis tho so try and find a space in a border to dig a decent home and grow one up an obelisk or an arch or a pergola. I've got a lovely "ooh la la" that flowers through the summer. Its survived well with me and seems quite vigorous.
