I wonder how do nurseries source their compost, make sure its (sufficiently?) sterile?

I have taken over an old bit of land that wasn't used at my local vicarage and I have turned it into something usable but not for profit. I will use it to grow fruit, veg and flowers for not only myself but hopefully local people and to raise some funds for the church.  I have been posting this on another thread called my allotment diary.

Sounds great! So you're giving the veg/flowers to local people for free?

:)   @cotty1000, that's good to hear. probably less stressful than running a nursery & depending on it for income. I will try & track down your thread.
  • Years ago, I had a huge greenhouse and I grew heaps and heaps of seeds...for the whole purpose of needing money to take the family on holiday.  I was a physically very fit mid early 30+ year old.  My greenhouse was about 25ft by 15, 3 tiers... I was also working full-time, no help.  After you have pricked out your 25th tray, you will be heartily sick of gardening and suffering back pain!  I did hanging baskets, planters, village fetes, sales from my doorstep anything to get rid of plants!  Try that for one season before you commit to anything.  Work out who and where your client is, plant say 40 packets of seeds, see how much space you need ( you will be very surprised!) and how much time you need to tend those.  Forget legislation for the moment...do not run into this headfirst, test the waters first!  We did go on holiday though...:-)

I have also sold on Ebay, it is a nightmare, packaging.. (so the plant survives the stress of the courier) needs careful ( expensive too) consideration, peoples expectations need to be taken into account ( 'no it isn't dead' and 'yes it needs watering within the week') I did hedging and trees,( sturdy, I thought) then bulbs ( surely you cant damage those in transit?) and then plug plants.  I still have loads of plastic preformed available that I can't sell (anyone?) Then you have to remain competitive!  Think long and hard before you throw money at this venture.
