I am amazed that the Glyphosate weedkiller (aka Roundup) is so widely recommended by members of this forum in many discussions. Are those members sponsored by Monsanto? unaware of the dangers of Glyphosate to the environment? See e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glyphosate#Advertising_controversy

You could put plastic sheeting over the area (as suggested above), mulch the whole area with wood chip and put raised beds up for 'no dig' gardening. You wouldn't have to dig up anything and could grow what you wish.

I would recommend seeing if you can borrow tools if you can, to start with, until you know what will be really useful. Esp the expensive ones/ power tools. Find out if there is any tool share network near you. Ask for help from friends and neighbours who might have the same soil / conditions as you and are facing similar challenges.

Big compost bins might be great. I imagine you would get a load of oak leaves in the autumn, which is great for making leaf mulch.

    Have fun!
