Laying lawn next to a new patio

Hey

First post here. We have just had a new patio laid and it looks fantastic however as part of our garden redesign we would like to create a new lawn. The new lawn will but up against the patio however the builder sloped the concrete away from the patio at the edges for about 10cm in width so I'm not sure we can achieve a decent enough depth of top soil. At its minimum the top soil will be about 2cm.

can someone offer some advice on this please

thanks in advance

Yep, that's how the patio builder left mine and it was actually great because you trim the edge as you mow.

    Are you turfing or seeding?

  • oh right from what I've read you need 2 to 3 inches of top soil. How is your grass looking and how long has it been down for? We are probably going to seed

I reckon the grass will spread to cover that gap even if you only put down enough soil to cover it lightly.  I had something similar and now you wouldn't know there was concrete an inch or so under the grass.

It's always difficult growing grass up to a hard landscape feature. I have the very same problem. The haunching-up of the mortar fillet gives topsoil depth issues as you rightly say and the concrete and slabs also draw out the moisture from any soil in this area. Double whammy. I keep mine well watered and regularly reseed along this feature.

I didn't have a problem with mine and it was South facing - it had been down about 6 years when I left.  I was asking about seed vs turf because you'd have to be careful about turfing slightly proud at the edges.

  • Cheers guys thanks for the info

think we will give it a go and see what happens
