Fatsia leaves

Doreen85Doreen85 Posts: 1

We have two fatsias japonicas outside in large tubs about 3 feet from each other. They sit in a partly sunny and reasonably sheltered corner.

One plant's leaves have wilted,  all totally flopped but still dark green in colour..  The other plant's leaves have stayed upright but  turned pale green and whitish looking.

We have watered them in the recent dry spell.

Any ideas as to the problem and how to solve it?

Hi Gordon - If they're in pots, they probably need repotting and some extra nutrients. What size are the pots, and what are they growing in? They need a soil based compost if they're in a pot long term.

They're best in some shade and may be struggling to be hydrated enough in pots. Wind is just as drying (if not more so) as sun.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Fairygirl is spot-on about planting them in a soil based compost. Normal compost will dry out very quickly.

Fatsias prefer free-draining soil and it may be worth checking if the drainage holes in the bottom of the pots aren't blocked, causing the roots to rot. Also, a layer of broken tiles at the bottom and some stones and sand on top will help with drainange as excess moisture can manifest itself in similar ways to under-watering - pale leaves are a warning sign.

It would be worth adding a liquid feed at some point but be careful not to use more than recommended as that too can cause issues, especially if the plants have root issues.
