Lawn advice

Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone could give me some advice about my Lawn as I am a bit of a novice where grass is concerned.I had a new lawn laid last September,& now there are a few perrenial weeds such as Dandelions etc, also some thin areas & bare patches, so I have bought a box of  Westland Aftercut all in one weed & feed, & also a box of Growsure fast acting Lawn Seed. What I would like to know is, do I weed & feed first, or seed first, & how long do I wait in between applications.any advice would be gratefully received,Also would it be best to Scarify & Aerate first as there are some dead grass areas too.Thank you, Elizabeth.

    Hello Elizabeth image

I think your lawn is too young to scarify just yet.

Don't use the Westland Aftercut all in one weed and feed if you have or are going to use the lawn seed as most of this type of product contain stuff that inhibits seed germination.

I would get a Daisy Grubber http://www.whittingtons.biz/garden-tools/hand-tools/spear-and-jackson-elements-daisy-grubber/p39518.html?gclid=CPOw-6utv9MCFe0Q0wodwMsD8w and use this to lever the dandelions out of the lawn, trying very hard not to break the long tap root which may well regrow if left behind.

If you have problems getting down on your knees to do this, you could use Roundup Gel weedkiller and dab some on each dandelion plant - within a few days the dandelions will be shrivelling and dying.

Then you can give the bare patches a gentle scratching over with a rake and scatter your lawn seed and water it in.

    Hope that helps image

  • Oh thank you so much Dovefromabove for your advice,I've just been looking at the the weed &feed list of ingredients,& I agree there an awful lot of chemicals in it.So I will give that a miss & do what you suggest & get them up by hand, there's not that many weeds anyway, then I will just seed it.Think I will return the Aftercut & get my money back or save it for next year. Many thanks.x
