I have inherited lilies of the valley which are under a membrane and heaps of grey chippings in full sun with a south facing fence behind. There are more and more each year. Temperamental is definitely the right word .
I am beginning to suspect those conifers, so next time I'll try under the drystone wall where there's more sun, the only trouble being that there's more wind and rain too. I live in Cumbria where it's been an unusually dry April, with plenty of sunshine but a bitterly cold wind and occasional frosts so we're about 2 weeks behind the rest of the country. My house windowledges are full of tender plants waiting to go out.

Bbarb, Fairygirl and I are both further north than you and weeks behind the south of England.
I don't think the lily of the valley will be bothered by wind and rain, Bbarb.
Liri - it wouldn't last long up here if it was!
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
