I have been give a small plant of Sollya heterophylla (Bluebell creeper). As it is half-hardy I will put it in a pot to grow up my archway.
Should I put in a small pot for this year and re-pot as it gets bigger each year or start with a big pot?
At the end of the season can I cut down the stems which have grown over the archway so I can bring it in for the winter and then cut back properly in the spring?
Should I pinch out the plant now to make it more bushy?
I live on the Isle of Wight so could I risk planting directly in the ground and if so would a mulch be enough to protect it?
I have one in a large pot in my garden. Its been there a year and had beautiful flowers on it all. I left it out all winter (which isnt harsh in Cornwall) and when I went up to water it a week ago I noticed it had lots and lots of seed pods on it. I have removed the seed pods and hoping I have done the right thing. I dont put it indoors in the winter and it has survived beautifully outside.
I have loads of them hanging off mine too, but I have left them on, they tend to drop off in the warmer months. Cutting them off is fine too. The plants do well regularly pruned, helps them to bush out even more.
