Can you identify this plant?

Hello fellow gardeners!

Can you identify this plant? It looks better suited to arid climates rather than the south coast of England but seems to have adapted well. We really like it but have no idea what it is or how to maintain it.

Thanks in advance!

    Callistemon...Australian bottlebrush...

If the flowers are red then most likely the variety citrinus 'Splendens'...

    East Anglia, England
  • Callistemon, or bottle brush plant, mine has performed wonderfully for the last ten years, and I'm in the Midlands So, fully hardy. They can get a bit leggy, as mine did, so I underplanted it with a phlox, both are thriving.

Can you cut those down, my daughter has a horrible tall leggy one?

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Well, conventional wisdom says they don't respond well to pruning, but I cut mine down to about a foot from the ground about 5 years ago and did it the world of good, it came back, albeit slowly like a new plant, from memory I cut it  at about this time of year, obviously you will lose any flowering for this year.
