Tall plant in wet place
A friend of a friend has a damp spot in their garden (they think their neighbour's pond leaks but the neighbour's deny it) and they want "something tall" that would grow well there. I'm afraid I don't have any more details. My friend asked me because she knows I like gardening. I thought of purple loosestrife but that's only about 1 metre high and dies back. Any ideas. (I don't even know how tall they mean by tall so open to all suggestions.)
Thanks for help with my vague question.

the red stemmed dogwoods grow well in damp soil. Cornus sanguinea.
In the sticks near Peterborough
Gunnera
Sorry
I know it's a cheeky answer.......but I couldn't resist.
Weeping willow will suck it up. Only for big gardens well away from the house.
Marshmallow grows to 6 ft.
I'd go with gunnera too but it does die down in autumn and the crown needs a good heap of compost poured over it to protect it from frosts but it would love the damp and grow magnificent foliage every spring and summer and provide a great focal point and some privacy as a screen..
What about Bamboo (but choose a non-invasive variety). Don't know how wet it is, but Ageratina Altissima Chocolate likes moist soil, and is just over a metre tall, lovely foliage, or Ligularia The Rocket which likes wet soil.
One person's idea of 'tall' isn't always the same as another's.
I would say that gunnera falls into the 'very tall' category
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Thalictrum 'Elin' gets to about 7 feet, likes moist soil (probably not waterlogged though). Eupatorium purpureum is another giant, which really likes wet soil. It's a plant I've always wanted to grow, if only I had the right spot for it. It's more of a robust bush than the Thalictrum. Butterflies love it.
Thanks all! I'll pass along your suggestions. I've been trying to get my friend to join the forum too.
Lobelia Cardinalis Queen Victoria, lovely foliage and late flowering. Grows up to a metre and in boggy conditions.
