New trees, should I return?

Hi, I have recently started improving on my garden, I know very little about gardening in general, although read up before I do anything.

Recently purchased a cherry tree and an amelanchier from the same nursery.

The amelanchier came in a 15l pot, but inside was a matt of fibrous roots in the shape of a 6" square pot, with a lot of nice new compost surrounding it of course! I managed to find the main root coiled up in the centre and planted it out, but it seems to be wilting and dieing back.

The cherry tree seemed strong and had decent roots, but today whilst outside I noticed a sap that looks like a canker, on further inspection, the tree looks like it's had real issues in the past also.

What are peoples opinions? Am I worrying too much, should I take the trees back? Spent a lot of money on the two trees.

Please see pics, thanks.

Can't get upload to work so here's links:

They look pretty poor specimens to me. How much did you pay for them?

  • They were standard nursery prices where I live. Am I being fair in wanting to return them?

  • Uh, no return them. The first one hasnt been dormant for a while and has been hacked out of the ground, and they haven't left enough roots to support that amount of foliage.   Call them and ask to speak to the boss and tell him what's happened. it's an elementary mistake, and there is no monatary reason for it so it's possible that one of the staff has messed up.

Take them both back. Not fit for purpose.

Blimey - they're poor. Doesn't matter what you paid - those aren't really acceptable.

Plants are often potted on at this time of year, so it's better to buy in autumn if possible, but even so, those roots should have been teased out and given a chance to spread into their new surroundings.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
