Whats making these holes

imageimage

please excuse the dead grass, the wind caught the glyphosate and well the results are ! tad gutted but the purchase of seeds and compost should resolve that .

Anyway to the real issue im wondering what could be making these holes ?

noticed them today along with alot of droppings rather similar to a cats but i live in the countryside and no body near me has a cat .

any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure the two things are connected? The hole looks 'ratty' to me, but as MU has said - hard to get the scale.

Cats often roam over quite a large area in the countryside, especially when they're hunting. Maybe the holes and the poo are connected in that the poo came from someone who was waiting for a rat to pop out of the hole ... Looks like rag holes to me. Poo could be cat or fox?

  • whether its a vole or rat hole, could i pop some poison down the hole and achive said result ?

No - you could poison hedgehogs, cats and other mammals in the process.

And rats rarely eat stuff that's actually in their tunnels so it's unlikely to work anyway.  If you're going to use poison get a proper secure bait box and the proper bait.

I don't think cats would leave droppings outside a den they were watching, they usually bury it anyway unless they're un-neutered Toms marking their territory.

Hedgehog's poo is black and a bit like firm cat poo.

If it is a rat, you need a baited rat trap or the services of a rat-catcher or you'll soon be over-run (sorry).  I live on a farm and we have to get the professionals in whenever we see a single one - they come for the animal feed (the rats I mean not the catchers!) and they soon get rid.  Not cheap though.
