Horse manure

jad1jad1 Posts: 130

I have some horse manure which has been in bags for about 5 months. I would like to use it as a mulch with the broad beans and later the runner beans. Can i have some opinions please as to whether it is still to new and could burn the plants.

Is it stable manure (including straw or of her bedding) or 'field pickings' (droppings gathered from a field and bagged up) ?

If it's manure, rather than use it as a mulch I would dig it into a trench or pit where you are going to grow your runner beans, to improve the moisture retention.

I find that field pickings are best used by adding to the compost heap as an activator.
