Planting climbers / ivy against garden walls
in Plants
Good afternoon all,
I hope that you are enjoying this warm weekend. I'm after a little advice. I'd like to bring some colour to my garden by planting creepers or climbers. The garden is a sun trap but is surrounded by white walls and tall trees (see pictures). I would like to plant either some climbing roses or Virginia creepers of varying colours but have no idea about plant species and what to go for. Any recommendations?
Also, im a little concerned about them causing damage to the wall structure. Should I be, or are they likely to be okay? I was planning on growing them against trellises or wire.
Sorry for my amateur-ness, and thank you in advance.

Ooh, that is going to look lovely. I would want to plant something that allows some of wall colour to come through so roses would be perfect. They won't damage your walls you can either use wire or trellis. Ivy is good for covering unsightly fences, your area certainly isn't that. You would need to pick the right rose, one that doesn't go mad and leggy.
Just a thought Marvin ...
If you think that you might want to re-paint those walls at some future date .... then you might want to consider attaching your trellis using hinges on to a timber batten ... that way you can lower the trellis and paint behind. You could do this at a time when your selected plants have just been pruned and will be OK laying forward for a bit while the paint dries.

Very clean, stylish piece of design there!!!
Ivy and Viginia Creepers don't need support and will find their way up your walls. Ivy is obviously evergreen so will add colour all year-round and when established, is a great for birds as a nesting site and as a food source from the seeds, not to mention the insects, spiders etc that inhabit it. There are variagated species which look stunning.
Virginia creeper has such magnificant seasonal constrasts of colour.
Wisterias, Clematis, Honeysuckle etc are truly stunning in many senses but need support. On a large wall like yours, wire frames would be ideal.
All of the above could potentially put stress on your wall due to weight a pressure from expanding trunk stems when they're mature, if planted too close to the wall. Climbing roses won't be as heavy but as long as the wall is strong, any of the above would look magnificent.
