Midwinter Fire Dogwood (bare rooted)

I know it is very late to be planting bare rooted plants, but I couldn't afford 125 potted ones and the area was only landscaped a couple of weeks ago.

The plants were very healthy looking on arrival, and I got them planted within 2 days of receipt.  Good planting holes, new top soil, watered in thoroughly and mulched with mushroom compost (although the water was pretty cold out of a nearby stream).

Since planting, the little leaves have shrivelled and the tips of the branches have gone brown.

Is this a sign that they are all going to die?  Or just a natural process that they will overcome?

Should I snip off the dead bits off the branches, or just leave them as they are?

Please tell me they are going to be ok!

I would accept that they're going to have suffered through not having been planted early enough - I'd mulch well and make sure they don't dry out this summer and give them a chance to establish root systems before they do any more growing. With luck most of them will survive and by this time next year they'll be looking much better.

My garden is dogwood heaven, but Midwinter Fire still looks mingy and miserable after 5 or 6 years and two different placements. Good luck with them!
