Watering new turf

Hi I have only just joined but have come across this forum whilst googling all about laying turf and how to look after it.....in fact googled so much my head hurts....quick back ground I took on a complete over haul of my small bit of garden that belongs to my flat this incl taking down and digging up the roots of a massive privet which was in an awful state then I had to pull down fence and put up new one (used pallets as free) then came the lawn well non existing due to the lack of light with the hedge so by hand I dug out all the rubbish removed any old grass and levelled as much as physically possible by hand added top soil and pre turf fertiliser I collected the turf myself and had it down within 2hrs of it coming off the field I have been watering everyday mostly twice as unlike scotland not had a drop of rain since I put it down and its been really windy......if you have got this far with the essay I am totally paranoid about making a mess of it and there is so much different opinion on internet......should I be watering it just so the soil underneath is damp a couple times a day or should I be giving it a deep water once a day....its been down 9 days and the white roots are growing and no shrinkage but there is a little yellowing along joins but grass is growing etc.......really just need a bit of reassurance I am doing right by it or more advice from experienced gardeners  have added a before and just after pic the first pic is just after laying and the 2nd is today 9 days laterimage image

You've done a great job there. As for the watering I would keep doing as you're doing. The lawn looks in good health. You want to keep the turf damp so that you don't suffer with shrinkage but you also want the roots to drive down in search of water so it's a bit of a balancing act.

  • Thankyou for putting my mind at rest I am loving getting into gardening but there is so much to learn x
