Pittosporum taming

ForestedgeForestedge Posts: 3,650

I have already reduced the height of an overgrown pittosporum  and it is now about three feet high.  Looking at it today and planning a tidy up of the remaining side growth I am now thinking maybe I will reduce its height even further.  Has anyone done this and does it regrow?  I may have to just tidy up the side growth but the trunk is quite large in diameter.

What do you call "an overgrown pittosporum" ? The normal size for some varieties is more than 3 metres ! Which variety is it?

Papi Jo - It was about 8 feet high and a couple of branches had 'torn' down with high winds earlier in the year and this is mainly why I reduced its height even though it looked very attractive..  The variety is 'tenuifolium'.

Once took a Pittosporum down to ground level - it was over 12 feet tall.  Within 6 weeks it was starting to re-sprout from the stump left behind.  If it'd left it, it would probably have been back to 12 feet tall within a couple of seasons.

That sounds hopeful Tim Burr - thinking about it overnight I think I will just 'trim' it to a nice shape after it finishes flowering and give it a chance.  If it eventually looks awful I may do what you did Tim and chop it down to ground level.
