Looks like number one is a pieris and number two is a skimmia. No idea about correct pruning, sorry
Think pieris needs little pruning, only to keep it in shape. (I've just hacked a leggy one of mine right back this afternoon, have yet to see if it survives )
I've never pruned my skimmia, will be interested to see the answer from the experts.
You can prune if necessary - both of them - without any issue, but the Skimmia has berries following the flowers, so it's tricky if you want to keep those. Ideally, take a few branches/stems right out to gently reduce the overall size, but if you need to tidy it all over, just do it after flowering. You sacrifice the berries, but sometimes these things have to be done. They tend to have a dome shape, so if you want to retain that, just deadhead it all over, and take a bit of extra stem at the same time.
Pieris can take a good hacking if necessary - been there, done that
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Funnily enough I've got these two next to each other. I think they're pretty slow growing aren't they?
I have them together also. For 3 years they have been slow and now all of a sudden some definite growth?
thank you you for the advice and both plants have now been pruned.
