Cabbage, Cauliflower and Broccoli problems

Why does my cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli have such long stems when growing. They can be 2 to 3 feet from the soil to the heads.

I do get reasonable heads and they are edible. I have been growing them for the last 3/4 years but always the same problem.

I grow them in a net and the heads grow to the top of the net.

What am I doing wrong?

    Is your veg patch shady?

Broccoli is a tall plant - mine are often a metre plus tall, but cabbages and caulis are usually shorter.

The patch  is in the sun for part of the day, Midday onward from May through the summer.

I will see what happens this year.
