Lilium tigrinum Splendens

AngieRAngieR Posts: 347

Back in 2013 I was given about half a dozen bulbils from a neighbour's lily.  Advice was to put them up into a deep container for a couple of years and forget all about them. Forget all about them, I certainly have, only just rediscovering the pot a couple of weeks ago.

I can't remember what advice I was given re when they are mature enough to plant in the garden.  The neighbour is no longer here to ask what to do next.  So what do I need to do? One other question if I may, will these have come true from seed or will it be a case of wait and see?  In which case I'd rather keep them going in a container until the are mature enough to bloom, so what would be advice for potting on?

Once again, thanks for all your help.

If they're big enough, pot them up either in individual pots to grow on to flowering size or else in groups in larger pots.   When my lilies have offsets or babies and need re-potting I tend to keep the big "mother" bulbs together and separate out the younger ones to grow on in a safe corner.

I always grow mine in pots so I can move them into a position of prominence while in flower then somewhere quiet while I feed the foliage to build up next year's bulb.   It also makes it easier to be vigilant for lily beetles.  They like good drainage which is another reason for pots.

Is it ok to knock them out of this pot and check for bulb size now Obelixx?  Is that what you mean by size?  Although I stand to be corrected, I am not sure lily beetle is a problem up here yet.  I have Lilium leichtlini and Lilium martagon growing in the front garden where drainage is good, so thought there would be as good a spot as any.
