Asparagus seedlings

SWAliSWAli Posts: 7

I moved house last May and took the risk of transplanting my 5 year old asparagus crowns.  They cropped reasonably well despite the disturbance and I harvested some seeds just in case they didn't make it through the winter in their pots.

I now have eight little asparagus seedlings growing happily in a seed tray which gives me great delight!  They are about 4cm tall.  However, what to do with them next?

How long do I leave them in the seed tray? when should I post them on? There are two seedlings very close together, is it going to be possible to separate them?

Any advice gratefully received.  I know I'm in this for the long haul when it comes to cropping!

I would plant a seedling individually in a 15cm pot, keep potting on when the roots show out the bottom and plant out in autumn, then be prepared for a long wait, it could be five more years before you get a crop!

Thank you tree hugger , very helpful.  Do I need to wait for the seedlings to grow taller before I transplant them?

top growth isn't important when re potting, its the roots that tell you when you need to repot
