Birds digging up the grass
For a couple of years birds have been attacking the lawn and trying to dig up what looks like bees [?] in the grass. despite putting down netting this is not working. Advice please on how we can stop this, would be much appreciated.

I suspect your lawn is infested with chafer grubs and beetles which birds and other critters will hunt with glee.
There's some info here from the RHS - https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=487 - including how to improve your lawn and reduce infestations.
Sorry, it's what birds do. Look at it another way. They are doing you a favour and eating pests; specifically leatherjackets.
What I can see of the green bits left untouched is lots of moss and weed which indicates that your lawn has problems. Fix those and it will be less attractive to the pests.
Carole, have a dig around in the first few inches under the grass and, as suggested, you may we'll find chafer grubs and / or leatherjackets. If you do then you can treat the lawn with nematodes in early September.
