Dahlias - have they perished?

I have several Dahlia's that I risked leaving in the ground over Winter albeit with a good mulch covering.

I had been hopeful they would have survived the relatively mild Winter (I live in N.Ireland), however with May fast approaching there is still no signs of life.

Is it likely they have died over Winter or when should I give up hope?

  • It's not unexpected that they won't have appeared yet, especially in Northern Ireland.  If there haven't been any hard ground frosts they should have survived but it doesn't take much to take them out.

Give it a few more weeks and if there are still no signs you could dig one up and inspect it and maybe put it somewhere warmer if it looks okay.

    August.

    They are probably still cold.

If you have any cover such as a cold greenhouse, digging up and potting on should encourage them. If you have a cliche over them where they are that would help.

If the tubers have not rotted over winter, they will grow.

A lot of mine, still in the greenhouse, have not emerged yet. They still have good fat tubers, they will come up when they are ready.
