Saxifraga

I have planted several different Saxifraga which look lovely and appear to be doing well. Not sure how to care for them. Several sites say to divide them every 3-5 years , however they do not say what to do about the flowers. One site says to trim lightly with shears after flowering but all the others do not mention doing anything at all. My instinct is to trim them but is that right. Any advice welcome please image

That depends on which Saxifrages you have planted. There are different types and each requires a different method of growing.

Can you remember the names and add them to this question?

  • Thanks for replying. I have four different sorts. Peter pan , Pixi pan , Saxony white and Saxony red. I didnt realise there are different sorts. I am doing a front and back garden from scratch so have kept a plan of what is where and all labels. I am in the process of doing a list to remember how to look after them all otherwise i am bound to forget something , senior moments !

The first 2 need very little doing. You can if you have the patience go over them and remove the finished flowers. I never do. If happy they my well seed around for you. If the clumps get too big then it is easy to pull out the offending bits.

The Saxony ones need the same sort of treatment too. Just go over them with a pair of scissors and cut off the dead flowers. Or not, if you are time pressed.

These are so called Mossy Saxifrages by the way,

  • Excellent, thank for your advice. I am one of those sad people who enjoy weeding so cutting the flowers with scissors no problem. I also do not work so plenty of time to potter in the garden.
