Gift for an allotmenteer..

I have a house-sitter who has an allotment which she loves. I'd like to give her a practical thank-you gift. I haven't seen her allotment, but she has mentioned that she grows veg and cane fruit. She also has a small garden, but since I haven't seen that either, I don't want to make guesses about what would, or wouldn't, be suitable. So I'm sticking with the allotment.

I wondered about a fruit tree, but even a small one would end up too big, I assume.

I'd be most grateful for any suggestions, as I don't have long to find inspiration.........

Hi Annyth. You can get what are called 'Family' apple trees that have two or three different varieties grafted onto one trunk. These do not get too big.

I would go for a more practical gift - either a soil testing kit which is useful to all gardens or a pair of leather gardening gloves - or both!  Or all gardeners would welcome a good pair of secateurs or a stainless steel trowel. These are items replaced on a fairly regular basis.

I think if you have not seen either growing space it would be very problematic buying them a plant of any description. without asking them first. It is a nice gesture but what if they dont like fruit, or haven't the room or allotment rules forbid trees etc etc. Much better to get them a non-plant present.

If you don't mind showing the value of your gift, a really good present would be a voucher for Chilterns seeds. I would love someone to do that for me. An excellent selection of flower and vegetable seeds as well as old and new varieties.

Or a subscription to a gardening magazine or The Cottage Gardener.

Great ideas there, too! And you make a good point, about buying plants for a space I haven't seen. I was given some pretty secateurs once and I still treasure them..

    Very many thanks!

Ive just bought my wife a tool belt from the classic section on https://www.gardengirl.co.uk/

She hinted so I bought it for her birthday in May. It was only £15 so not to bad.
