Blue, white & pink/mauve bluebells

These were planted in our garden before we moved in 37 years ago.image There are far too many blue plants - they spread like nobodies business, but I thought you might like to see the three colours together.

  • To be honest I don't know pansyface - the bluebell woods on the cliffs in Guernsey are being invaded by the white three angled garlic flower which is very similar to a white bluebell, but from a different family.  I have never seen white bluebells apart from these in our garden.

I had three colours in a past garden (long ago - 1980s ish) and we had a wild area beyond so I assumed they had come from the field.  Purty huh? image

This was my first garden where I thought they were weeds and learned about bluebell "slime" and "squeak" when you try to pull them up!

I wasn't successful by the way, they were still there when I left the house.  I've had to buy them in here (English not Spanish) and so far they're still in a pot but plan to plant them out at some point.

  • They can be a menace - but also look lovely in the right setting Cloggie - the bulbs/corms are so deep it is a struggle to dig them out completely.  We thought we had almost eradicated them from certain areas of our garden but up they have come again this spring.  The flowers are fine but the leaves take up so much room in a flower bed, good luck with your planting out.

Have just filled half a wheelie bin with bulbs from a border I was clearing. They spread like wildfire. Chances are I haven't managed to dig them all out but it is a start.

  • I know how you feel hogweed - you have to start somewhere and it seems to me you have made a good job of clearing them - I am sure there will be a few left, it is so easy to break the stems before you actually find the bulb - they are usually very deep.  Let us know how you got on - what are you going to plant in their place?
