Water hawthorn control
I haven't posted here for quite a while but I'm after people's experiences of water hawthorn and it's thinning from a rather neglected pond.
The pond is about 30ft in diameter, but how deep are the bulbs in the sediment of the pond? The foliage will come away with ease but the bulb's are another matter.
It's wadeable and safe to operate in.

I envy your problem Dave, I can't get it to 'take' at all
In the sticks near Peterborough
I've just put a tiny one in my little pond - I'll have to keep an eye on it.
I don't suppose there is an easy answer to your question, I imagine the bulbs will have settled on top of the thick sediment at the bottom, only way to find out is to follow a leaf back to the base and there will be a thicket of bulbs that hopefully you can lift out - and sell on at £7 a pop!
Maybe someone with some knowledge of the plant will be able to offer a more educated suggestion.
How deep is the pond?

My Water Hawthorn is in a shallow plastic bowl - bought as a 'kit' with a water lily, planting basket etc. The water lily, needless to say, didn't survive so I bought my water hawthorn and put it in the bowl instead where it has lived for several years now and despite my complete ignoring of it it seems to be quite happy. Slugs do get up the side of the plastic bowl and have a munch on the over hanging leaves. I think that Pete's suggestion is probably the solution. £7 goodness me! Mine was about £1.50.
Same here nut - it doesn't survive the winter up here unfortunately - in any pond I've had.
I love it but I've decided not to get it again
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
