Watercress

bobloesbobloes Posts: 134

HI All

I am starting out on the great watercress journey and today sowed my seed.  However I am in a quandry about where to grow them when they germinate.  What I have read is confusing because it says sunlight but not during hottest time of day.   And do not let the container dry out.  I am intending to use the one plastic box in another method.  As my understanding is that it grows naturally beside slow running water that would indicate a lot of time out of the sun.  I do not really have the sort of garden that lends itself to this kind of situation.  Am I incorrectly over concerned about the amount and type of sunlight it will get?  Any other advice gatefully accepted.

Thanks

It grows quite readily in water and doesn't need a lot of sun, in my experience.

Commercially, it's grown in big areas of shallow water - often undercover I think. I have some in my pond  (to keep it clear) and it really only gets sun in the morning as it faces mainly east. image

I've had it growing in the header pool of my fish pond for years. That is in full sun from mid-morning onwards.
I chucked some onto an east-facing flower bed one autumn as it was dying back expecting never to see it again, but during the following wet spring there was watercress popping up everywhere in that flower bed and a patch kept going until summer when it dried out.

So I think if the conditions are right and they have good fresh water (not sure how suitable tap water is..) and a good sunny position hopefully it'll work for you
