Nutrients & watering cycles for hydroponic herb veg window garden

I'm thinking of building a window garden out of old plastic bottles and a drip system using a reservoir and aquarium pump controlled by a timer. I'm gonna use one of those baskets with the clay balls and some soil underneath it if that makes sense. I'm wondering what kind of nutrients to add to the water. Like is your day to day general liquid plant fertiliser safe to use, I'm just weary about that seeing as what I'll be eating what I grow on a weekly basis, depending on if the growth allows me too that is. Also how often and for how long should I set the watering system on for? The timer I have does 15 minute increments. Thank you in advance if you can answer my questions and back your advice.
