Hosta
Help, please. What do you advise? I've bought some hostas which are essentially bare root, they were in a bag. They've started to grow but because of lack of light they are white and a little slimy, not like how they come through the ground. When planting should I bury the whole thing or leave some of the white slimy shoot above ground level? Thank you

Hi Julie,
I know what you mean when buying stuff as bare roots. I have just recently bought Echinacea plants with very similar situation. They should not really be placed in sealed bags.
I have planted the whole lot almost underground and mulched on top. You can do the same with Hostas since they form from the roots. You might find that the shoots or what's left of them may die off as tends to be the case and as its covered in slime, its already rotting. New ones will come up so don't worry. It may take 2-3 weeks before you see anything though but they are tough plants.
Thanks Batwood. Will do and will do the same with anything else that I get looking similar.

Just a note when multching Hosta's. It is always best to multch around the plant and not cover it completely over with multch material. Particularly with Hosta's as they require light to get to the new shoots that predominately start appearing in mid Spring
Thanks Steve. Will be sorting these out when i get back from work tomorrow evening, fingers crossed.
plant it with the growing tip at soil level.
I've over mulched hostas before to the extent that one was underground for about 4 years until I dug up the dormant remains. Once I'd replanted it, it grew, but I'd not recommend it.
