Why is my magnolia "Susan's" flower buds being eaten before flowering?

Squirrels eat the magnolia buds in my garden after they have eaten the camellia flowers. Presumably they think it is salad.
No squirrels where we live, relativley new plant and still in pot. Could this be diseased?
Do you have a pic? I planted a young Magnolia Susan that i planted last autumn. I've a few buds on it that haven't opened yet. I hard that frost can kill the flower buds.
